Executive Summary

When HCP Associates began working with Nasatka in 2008, the company had more than three decades of experience manufacturing crash-rated vehicle barriers.

Then known as Nasatka Barrier, the company’s identity no longer reflected its expanding capabilities in integrated physical and electronic security.

HCP spearheaded the transition to Nasatka Security, developed Global Lines of Defense®, and built an integrated program spanning research, branding, public relations, crisis communications, digital, sales support and nearly two decades of national and international trade-show marketing.

The goal was bigger than a rebrand. HCP helped reposition Nasatka from a barrier manufacturer into a global security solutions provider.

Client Perspective
“
“HCP has been much more than our marketing firm. They’ve become a strategic partner that truly understands our business, our competitors and the security industry.” “They stay on top of emerging threats and help us understand what those changes mean for our customers and our business. Whether it’s industry research, crisis communications, public relations, major trade shows or international markets, they understand what we do and why it matters. That kind of industry knowledge is rare in a marketing partner.”

Understanding the Landscape

Nasatka entered the security industry with a pioneering legacy.

Founded in 1975 by Ralph Nasatka, a U.S. Army Korean War veteran, the company helped pioneer crash-rated vehicle-barrier technology in the United States. Nasatka developed and patented systems used to protect sensitive federal facilities, government buildings and military installations, particularly throughout the Washington, D.C. region.

By 2008, the post-9/11 security environment had transformed the marketplace. New competitors, technologies and threats were changing how government, military and critical-infrastructure customers approached perimeter protection.

Nasatka had the history, technology and engineering expertise. HCP’s challenge was to ensure the marketplace understood the full breadth of what the company had become.

Research

HCP’s understanding of Nasatka’s industry has never come from desk research alone.

Early in the relationship, HCP traveled with Nasatka to Intersec in Dubai, studying international competitors, technologies, buyers and market trends firsthand. That established an approach HCP has followed for nearly two decades: learn the industry by being in the industry.

HCP leadership and team members have traveled alongside Nasatka to major security, defense, military and engineering exhibitions around the world. We know the associations, the shows, the competitors, the audiences, the technologies and the products.

That industry knowledge became especially important when vehicle crash-testing standards underwent a major transition from the U.S. Department of State’s traditional K-ratings to ASTM standards and M-ratings. The newer system changed how penetration was measured and expanded crash classifications for different vehicle types.

For Nasatka, this was much more than a terminology change. Barrier by barrier, HCP worked with the client to update testing information, crash ratings, specifications, product literature, sales collateral and digital content so architects, engineers, government buyers and security professionals could understand how each product performed under the new standards.

HCP had to understand what the new ratings meant, how they differed from the previous system, how Nasatka’s individual products were tested and classified, and how those changes affected A&E specification, DoD requirements and government procurement.

Just as importantly, HCP knows how to make the complicated understandable.

That knowledge continues to inform everything we do for Nasatka.

Strategy

HCP’s strategic recommendation was straightforward.

Nasatka should no longer compete simply as a manufacturer of barriers. It should compete as a security solutions provider.

HCP spearheaded the transition from Nasatka Barrier to Nasatka Security and developed Global Lines of Defense® to express both the company’s international reach and its layered approach to perimeter protection.

The new positioning extended across branding, public relations, digital communications, sales tools, product marketing and trade shows.

Marketing

Global Lines of Defense® became the foundation of an integrated communications program.

HCP has managed national and industry public relations supporting product introductions, contract awards, acquisitions, company milestones, industry trends and major trade-show appearances. When emerging threats or security incidents change the conversation around perimeter protection, HCP helps Nasatka respond through media relations, thought leadership and, when necessary, crisis communications.

For nearly two decades, HCP leadership and team members have supported Nasatka at major exhibitions including GSX/ASIS, ISC West, ISC East, Intersec Dubai, AUSA, SOF Week, International Security Expo London, FPED, SAME, SIA Perimeter PREVENT, GovSec and other specialized industry events.

HCP created a scalable family of exhibit environments, including a custom designed 20’ × 20’ two-story guard-tower booth, a 10’ × 20’ traveling exhibit capable of displaying one physical barrier, and a 10’ × 10’ exhibit for smaller events. Messaging, collateral, PR, media outreach, product introductions and sales support were coordinated around each event.

Most recently, HCP launched the latest Nasatka Security website, creating a modern digital platform that brings the company’s positioning, products, technical information and Global Lines of Defense® story together for government, military, A&E, critical-infrastructure and international audiences.

More than 15 years ago, long before today’s generative AI tools, HCP began creating sophisticated 3D animated environments using platforms including Autodesk 3ds Max and Bryce3D. Virtual cities, military installations and government facilities allowed customers to see how Nasatka technologies worked together to protect an entire environment. The work earned HCP numerous industry awards for the “A World of Security” animation.

What We Learned

Great marketing in a highly technical industry requires more than understanding the client’s brand. It requires understanding the client’s world.

Nearly two decades alongside Nasatka have given HCP firsthand knowledge of the competitors, technologies, standards, associations, customers and threats shaping the perimeter-security industry.

Our job is to understand that complexity and make it understandable.

What began as marketing for a barrier manufacturer ultimately helped tell a much larger story. Nasatka wasn’t simply building barriers. It was building Global Lines of Defense®.
