For more than 25 years, PBX-Change built a successful family-owned technology and communications business serving companies throughout Tampa Bay. HCP Associates helped transform the company into KUDUCOM, a new name, identity and positioning rooted in the family’s South African heritage and built for its next generation.

For more than 25 years, PBX-Change built a successful family-owned technology and communications business serving companies throughout Tampa Bay.
But the company had outgrown its name.
“PBX” reflected a legacy telecommunications technology rather than the broader company PBX-Change had become. At the same time, the business was approaching a generational leadership transition, expanding beyond its Tampa Bay roots and embracing new technologies and opportunities.
HCP Associates was engaged to help prepare the company for its next generation.
The relationship was unusual from the beginning. For approximately 18 years, PBX-Change, and now KUDUCOM, has served as HCP’s own managed service provider (MSP). HCP knew the company not only as a client, but as a customer that depended on its technology, service and people every day.
Over several months, HCP worked closely with the family and senior leadership through strategic planning, competitor research, technology gap analysis, stakeholder testing and HCP’s proprietary branding and positioning process.
The result was much more than a new logo. HCP transformed PBX-Change into KUDUCOM, creating a new name, identity, mission, vision, positioning, website and integrated launch strategy rooted in the family’s South African heritage and designed to carry an established company into its next generation.
Founder & Chief Financial Officer KUDUCOM
PBX-Change wasn’t a startup searching for an identity. It was an established family-owned company approaching an important transition.
After more than two decades in business, a new generation of leadership was emerging, the company was preparing to grow beyond Tampa Bay, and the PBX technology embedded in its name no longer represented the breadth of its services or its future.
HCP also knew the company from a perspective most marketing firms never would: as a long-time customer. For approximately 18 years, PBX-Change and KUDUCOM have served as HCP’s MSP. Long before HCP was engaged to reposition the company, the firm had experienced its technology, responsiveness, customer service and people firsthand.
That history gave HCP an unusual perspective during the branding process. HCP understood not only what the company sold, but what it meant to depend on its people and technology to keep a business connected and operating.
For HCP, understanding the transition also meant understanding the family behind the company. During the first several months of strategic planning, HCP worked closely with family members and senior leadership to understand the company’s history, culture and aspirations for the next generation.
The family’s South African roots became particularly important. Having traveled and spent time specifically in South Africa, HCP leadership understood the family’s connection to the country and recognized an opportunity to authentically connect that heritage to the company’s future.
The challenge wasn’t simply to rename PBX-Change. It was to create a brand the family could see itself in and the next generation could carry forward.
HCP’s process began with months of strategic planning involving the family and senior leadership.
The work examined PBX-Change’s competitive environment, technology portfolio, customers, growth opportunities and changing telecommunications marketplace. HCP conducted competitor research and technology gap analysis while exploring how the company’s evolving technology partnerships could support its future direction.
Naming and positioning concepts were tested among stakeholders as HCP worked to identify an identity that could reflect both where the company came from and where it intended to go.
One direction stood apart. The family’s South African heritage provided an authentic connection to the kudu, a distinctive antelope native to Southern Africa known for speed, agility, alertness and its unusually large ears.
Those characteristics aligned naturally with the company HCP already knew so well: responsive, adaptable and, most importantly, committed to listening to its customers.
KUDUCOM wasn’t simply a name created for the company. It came from understanding the family and the business behind it.
HCP’s strategic recommendation was to leave the limitations of the PBX-Change identity behind and create a completely new brand capable of carrying the company into its next generation.
KUDUCOM. The name connected the family’s South African heritage to a modern technology and communications brand built around speed, agility, awareness and listening.
HCP carried that thinking into every element of the visual identity. The forward-moving horns of the brandmark symbolize forward thinking and momentum, while the kudu looks back toward the company name, representing an organization moving forward while continually considering how it can better serve its customers.
HCP developed the complete brand system around that idea, including the name, brandmark, typography, color palette, imagery, mission, vision, voice and standards governing how KUDUCOM would present itself.
At its center was a positioning line that captured something HCP had experienced firsthand as a customer: Real People. Real Connections.
PBX-Change described what the company sold. KUDUCOM expressed who the company was.
HCP took the KUDUCOM identity from strategy through implementation and public launch.
The transformation included a comprehensive brand guide establishing the company’s visual identity, typography, color systems, photography, iconography, voice, applications and standards.
HCP developed a new sales-focused website, including content, imagery and technical implementation, and created the communications strategy for introducing KUDUCOM to existing customers, prospects and the broader business community.
The identity extended across the company’s entire physical and digital presence, including corporate materials, building signage, fleet vehicles, apparel, digital communications and social media.
HCP also developed community-engagement strategies, launch messaging, public-event talking points and measurable objectives and KPIs to ensure the rebrand was more than a visual exercise.
From strategic planning through public launch, the transformation was completed in approximately six months, with KUDUCOM officially introduced in early 2023.
Today, KUDUCOM continues to emphasize the principles established through the original strategic process: modern technology delivered with personal service, responsive local support and real people helping businesses stay connected.
Transformed the 25-year-old PBX-Change identity into KUDUCOM, creating a brand designed for the company’s next generation.
Conducted family and senior-leadership strategic planning, competitor research, technology gap analysis and stakeholder testing.
Brought an unusual customer perspective to the process, drawing on an approximately 18-year relationship with PBX-Change and KUDUCOM as HCP’s own MSP.
Connected the new identity authentically to the founding family’s South African heritage.
Created the KUDUCOM name, identity and Real People. Real Connections. positioning.
Developed the mission, vision, visual system and comprehensive brand standards.
Created a new sales-focused website and coordinated public launch strategy.
Extended the identity across signage, fleet vehicles, apparel, corporate materials, digital and social communications.
Established community-engagement strategies, marketing objectives and measurable KPIs.
Completed the research, strategy, branding and launch process in approximately six months.
Created a positioning platform that continues to influence how KUDUCOM presents its technology and customer-service philosophy today.
A successful rebrand isn’t about replacing an old logo with a new one. It’s about understanding when a company has outgrown the identity that helped build it.
PBX-Change had more than two decades of history, customer relationships and family equity worth preserving. But its legacy name described where telecommunications had been rather than where the company was going.
Months spent working directly with the family gave HCP an understanding a conventional branding exercise might have missed. That understanding also came from nearly two decades on the other side of the relationship, as a customer. HCP didn’t have to imagine what it meant to depend on PBX-Change. We already did.
The family’s South African heritage gave KUDUCOM authenticity. Research gave the brand strategic purpose. And years of firsthand experience with its people gave its positioning a promise HCP knew was true: Real People. Real Connections. The company didn’t need to change who it was. It needed a brand that finally reflected what it had become and where the next generation wanted to take it.
